When you hear that someone is knocking at the door, what do you do? I’ll admit that even if I’m home alone, I’ll rush to the door and open it. I just don’t think twice about it.
Well, after I’ve seen this story, I might just change my mind.
Recently, Kim Fleming Cernigiliaro had a close call with someone who wanted to break into her home. She was alone at the time and could hear loud knocking.
Unlike me, she was savvy. She knew that she shouldn’t answer the door to anyone when she had no one else in the house. That’s why she simply ignored the knocking.
When the sound had stopped, she waited a while just to make sure that the person had really gone. It was only then that she decided to venture out and take a look at what had happened.
She imagined that there would be an annoying brochure waiting for her on her porch. What she actually saw, seriously scared her.
What she saw when she opened the door was an elastic band over her door knocker. Most people might look at this odd sight and think that it was not dangerous. In fact, many thieves use this method to make sure that they get into your home when you unhinge the door.
After calling the Sherif about what had happened, Kim wrote a Facebook post to tell the world about it.
It would appear that whoever was knocking had the intention of forcing the door open when she unhinged it. They would have used the elastic band to help them with this.
In the post, she said, “The Sheriff came by yesterday and said this is happening all of a sudden, as soon as you unlatch the door, they do not wait for you to turn the knob, they can bust in on you.” Scary, right?
Here are ten ways you can protect your home:
