China has always had a bad reputation for its food standards. But there has recently been a shocking discovery. About 35 restaurants in China are adding opiates like morphine and codeine to their food.
Investigations have been launched to find out how this is happening. Food items like noodles, lobsters and hotpots have been found to contain opiates in them. Consuming this food regularly will make people addicted to poppies. This can lead to serious cases of drug abuse as well. This has been revealed by Wei Tao, the deputy chief of the Food Institute of Guizhou Provincial Centre for Disease Control.
Out of the 35 restaurants under suspicion, 5 are already being prosecuted. Earlier, the owner of one such restaurant has been sent to prison for 18 months. He had mixed poppy powder in his food items. Poppy powder is a powerful opiate.
It is difficult to detect the presence of poppy powder in food. When mixed in low quantities with Chinese Salt or chilly oil, it is almost impossible. However, the effects these small quantities can have on your health are bad. They will slowly accumulate in your body and cause serious harm after some time.
