30 Reasons to Never Put Another M&M in Your Mouth Ever Again

30 Reasons to Never Put Another M&M in Your Mouth Ever Again

Did you know that M&M was created in order for soldiers to have a daily dose of chocolate at war without it melting?

That’s right! Your ever popular chocolate snack M&M was made in 1941 by Forrest E. Mars and William F.R. Murrie (Hershey Chocolate’s President’s Son).

The brand — M&M was coined out of their surnames and the partnership of these two men ensured that Mars was able to use Hershey chocolate in their own products.

It was Hershey that had a monopoly on chocolate in the U.S in those days.

These days M&M is currently sold in over a hundred nations and with about 33 different types of fillings.

Though in 1976, Red candies were prohibited because of their toxic dyes. The FD&C Red #2 was also believed to be carcinogenic and so were banned.

In 1983 however, Red candies made a dramatic comeback and were reintroduced into the market.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and a Change.org petitioned and made a press release urging Mars to eliminate the artificial colors and informing customers that the artificial colours were actually neurotoxic chemicals.

CSPI recommended that any product with these harmful artificial colours should include on their labels, warnings to customers, informing them of the health risk.

On the original M&M the following ingredients are listed;

  • Milk chocolate (milk-fat, sugar, , cocoa butter, chocolate, skim milk, salt, lactose, artificial color, soy lecithin), corn starch, sugar, >1% corn syrup, dextrin, artificial colors (Red 40 Lake, Blue 1 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2 Lake, Blue 2),gum acacia.

Here are the dangers of these ingredients to the human body;

1. Soy Lecithin

Did you know that 93% of all soy in production are GMO?

They are known to…

  • cause breast cancer
  • affect the reproductive system
  • cause cerebral and behavioural abnormalities

2. Blue #1

  • hay fever
  • low blood pressure
  • hives
  • asthma
  • allergic reaction
  • cancer and tumors

3. Red #40

  • hyperactivity in children
  • DNA damage
  • hives
  • inflammation in the mouth
  • cancer

4. Yellow #6

  • swelling of the skin
  • hyperactivity
  • nettle rash
  • migraines
  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • allergic reactions
  • cancer

5. Yellow #5

  • allergic reactions
  • hyperactivity
  • cancer

6. Blue #2

  • bloating, gas, nausea and loose stool
  • hyperactivity in children
  • known to cause brain tumors in lab rats
  • abnormal cell development

These artificial colours are still being used by the Mars Company despite their apparent health complications.

The sad part is the FDA have even declared these artificial colours has been safe for human consumption inspite of scientific evidence proving otherwise.

It was claimed by Forbes in 2007 that Mars had a turnover of about $27.4 million dollars.

With this kind of income it would be expected that they look for more natural and healthier alternatives rather than the petro-chemical artificial colours they are currently using.

It is advisable for you to quit these harmful sweets and go for other alternatives such as;

  • Sweetriot, which has no GMO ingredients.
  • Good Cacao, they are supplement enriched chocolate bars.
  • Equal Exchange, this is 100% organic.
