This Woman Found the Nurse Who Saved Her Life 38 Years Ago

As a baby, Amanda Scarpinati was taken to Albany Medical Center in the USA, suffering from severe burns from a hot steam humidifier. During her recovery, a young nurse took care of her. The pictures of them together were published in the hospital’s annual report from 1977, which Amanda has been keeping throughout her life, hoping to find this woman and thank her.

These photos gave Amanda strength in the darkest hours of her life: “I took comfort looking at the pictures of a beautiful woman — a nurse who took care of me. Looking at them, I felt her love and compassion.”

For many years, Amanda had been unsuccessfully trying to find the nurse, whose name she couldn’t find in the report. In another attempt, she turned to social media and posted her story and photos on her Facebook page. The response came almost immediately — within a day — that this young nurse was Susan Berger.

Sue remembered this girl: “She was very peaceful. Usually, when babies come out of surgery they’re sleeping or crying. She was just so calm and trusting. It was amazing.”

Two weeks later they met in the Albany Medical Center, where their story began 38 years ago.

It turned out that Susan just turned 21 in these photos, and the child in her arms was one of her first patients. She didn’t expect such a warm meeting after 38 years, or such a reverent attitude to her just because she was doing her work well: “I don’t know how many nurses would be lucky enough to have something like this happen, to have someone remember you all that time.”
