Amou Haji, an 80-year-old Iranian, is being called the world’s dirtiest man. In an article published Jan. 6, he told the Tehran Times that he hasn’t bathed in 60 years.
Haji reportedly lives in isolation in Dejgah village, in the Southern Iranian province of Fars, subsists on rotten porcupine meat, and says the thought of a bath after all this time makes him very angry.
He said he adopted his extreme, isolated lifestyle after suffering emotional setbacks in his youth. In addition to animal feces, Haji apparently likes regular smokes as well — five at a time.
Amou lives in the village of Dezhgah (city of Farashband in Fars province of Iran).
Mr. Haji usually dons an assortment of rags and adds a war helmet to fend off the winter chill. He does put some effort into his appearance though, some villagers have reported seeing Mr. Haji checking himself out in the side-view mirrors of cars and he keeps his hair trimmed by burning it off in an open fire.
It’s not just bathing that Haji dislikes. His disgust for fresh food and clean drinking water is unmistakable.
Haji doesn’t really have a house – the earth is his home. He lives in a hole in the ground, much like a grave, to keep him grounded and in touch with the reality of life. Sometimes he sleeps in an open brick shack that the villagers constructed for him out of pity. Locally, he is known as Amou Haji. ‘Amou’ is the Farsi term of endearment for a kind old man.
Makes you think about what’s really important in life, doesn’t it?
Haji isn’t the only person in the world who hates bathing. There’s an Indian man who has not had a bath in 38 years.
