Alternative Treatments for Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental condition that can make it very difficult for the victim to recognize reality from imaginary items. Many symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and incomprehensible speech. These symptoms can make it very difficult for a schizophrenia-sufferer to live a normal life, especially without some sort of medication or management plan. Fortunately, there are some effective (natural) treatments that can help one manage the condition.

Natural Treatment for schizophrenia

While these alternative treatments discussed below are not meant to replace any other medication or resources, they can certainly reduce episodes and side effects, making the condition more manageable.

Ginkgo Biloba

This herb is extremely effective in improving circulation in the brain, which supports healthy memory and cognitive function. For effective results, Ginkgo Biloba needs to be consumed in the form of a tea to assist with symptoms of schizophrenia. This should be enjoyed three times per day, and can be used as a quick remedy to calm down an individual who is suffering from a schizophrenic hallucination. [ Luo , Zhang , and Doruk study ]

Asian Ginseng

This herb contains neuro-protective properties that can help protect and stabilize brain function. For an effective treatment, one should take a teaspoon of dried Asian Ginseng powder and make a tea with it two times per day. The remedy must be followed for at least six months, but can definitely be followed beyond that.

St. John’s Wort

This herb is one of the most widely used treatments for mental disorders, such asdepression and schizophrenia. The tension and excitement that result from the symptoms associated with schizophrenia, can be calmed with the use of St. John’s wort. This herb is also effective in alleviating anxiety, nervousness, and fear. Take one tablespoon of the juice or tincture per day to control the symptoms of this mental disorder.

Holy Basil Leaves

Holy Basil is a potent antioxidant and promotes healing in the brain. Drinking a basil leaf tea can promote healthy brain function, thereby reducing schizophrenic symptoms. Simply add ¼ teaspoon of basil leaves and ½ teaspoon of sage to a cup of boiling water. Allow this to steep for about ten minutes, then strain and drink. If the patient drinks this tea twice every day, he/she will see noticeable improvement in the schizophrenic symptoms.

Licorice Powder

This herb helps regulate brain function, and can also manage stress, and anxiety. Simply steep one teaspoon of licorice in hot water for ten or fifteen minutes; strain then drink. For maximum results, drink this licorice tea on an empty stomach first thing every morning. Let your body digest the tea, and then have breakfast about an hour later.

Indian Gooseberry

A natural antioxidant and supporter of the immune system, Indian gooseberry can help the body fight back against cognitive diseases such as schizophrenia. For an easy solution to help with some symptoms, eat 2-3 Indian gooseberries every day. If the gooseberries themselves are not readily available, make a tea twice daily with the dried leaves of Indian gooseberry.

Cold Water Fish

Fish is known to be a healthy source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Cold-water fish in particular are extremely rich in omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, which are both crucial to promoting brain health. Opt for a daily fish oil supplement, or include more salmon, koi, trout, and steelhead in the patient’s diet.

Green Cardamom

The seeds of green cardamom promote healing in the body, and especially in the nervous system, which makes it an excellent treatment for those suffering from schizophrenia. Similar to the Asian Ginseng, make a tea out of one teaspoon of cardamom powder and add it to a cup of boiling water; steep; strain; then sip. Drink this two times every day to reduce schizophrenia symptoms.

For all individuals suffering from schizophrenia, this is one vegetable that is a must for their diet. The niacin that is so abundant in carrots greatly helps improve brain health. It is best to eat them raw; simply munch on 2-3 raw, medium-sized carrots every day. One can also juice the carrots, combined with a small amount of spinach and water, and drink this juice every day.

While these alternative treatments can greatly help manage symptoms of schizophrenia, it is still important to follow any necessary medication plans, therapies, or other treatments that have been prescribed. However, incorporating these remedies in to a sufferer’s daily routine can help such one live a normal life and minimize, if not eliminate, some symptoms of schizophrenia.
