1. Drinking too much alcohol is bad for your health for many reasons and one of them is that it leads to damaged kidneys because it causes stress on the liver and kidneys. What increases the risk of developing kidney failure when drinking excessive amounts of alcohol is the fact that then the uric acid will be stored in the renal tubules. And alcohol also leads to dehydration and the kidneys have trouble with finishing their function properly. 2 drinks for men and 1 drink for women and older people is the recommended dose of daily consumption of alcohol.

2. The list of why smoking cigarettes is bad for the human health is endless, but on that list you can also find kidney damage. Yes, smoking cigarettes can lead to damaged kidneys because it increases the heart rate and blood pressure and it also decreases the blood flow and narrows the blood vessels in kidneys. You should stop smoking because it is for your own good.

3. Consuming too much caffeine can also lead to damaged kidneys because too much caffeine is increasing your blood pressure, and if this is happening for a longer period of time it will result with kidney damage. And besides that, caffeine can also raise the excretion of calcium in urine. You still can consume caffeine but you should be careful with the amount you are consuming.

4. High intake of salt can lead to many serious health issues and one of them is damaged kidneys. This is so because 95% of the sodium consumed through food is metabolized by kidneys. Consuming too much salt will make the kidneys to have trouble with finishing their functions properly, because they will start working harder than before in order to excrete the excess salt. This can even lead to water retention in your body and that leads to a higher risk of kidney disease.

5. Many people ignore the common infections such as colds, flu, coughs, tonsillitis, pharyngitis and more, but they can lead to serious kidney damage. That is why it is of a big importance to never ignore those common infection, but you should treat them properly and always on time.

6. High protein diet or to make it clear for you, consumption of big amounts of protein-based foods such as red meat is increasing the risk of kidney disease. Kidneys have role to metabolize and eliminate nitrogenous wastes from the body which are by-products of the protein digestion. High consumption of protein is increasing glomerular pressure and hyper filtration and that is increasing the risk of developing kidney issue.

7. Lack of sleep is another unhealthy habit for your overall health. While we are sleeping the organ tissues are renewing and if this process is interrupted with not getting enough sleep it can lead to damage of many organs, including the kidneys.

8. Not drinking enough water is another unhealthy habit for your overall health. Your blood is becoming concentrated and with that there will be less blood flow to the kidneys, if your body lacks water. And we all know that kidneys flush out toxins from the body, and if you lack water that will cause trouble in that process and those toxins will be stored in your body, and this can lead to many health problems. The recommended daily intake of water is 10 to 12 glasses at minimum.

9. Regular use of analgesics and over-the-counter painkillers can cause more harm than good to your health. If you have some kind of inflammation or fever, you should not treat it always with them, because they can damage kidneys and even other organs in your body, especially when analgesics have been used for a longer period of time. And if you have reduced kidney function you should always consult with your doctor first before taking any painkiller.

10. We kept this for the last one with a reason, because it is one of the main causes of kidney damage. And we are talking about delaying the urge to urinate. If you do not empty your bladder on time, the urine will be in the bladder for a longer period and that will allow multiplying of the bacteria to breed in the urine and those bacteria can lead to kidney or urinary tract infection. If you often postpone the urge to urinate, you should really change before you start having serious health issues.
