Tongue can give us very important information about the overall health of the entire organism. Chinese medicine has been studying the health of the tongue for thousands of years. The texture of tongue is representing the digestive system’s functions. Healthy tongue should have a thin white coating on the surface which indicates that the digestive system is quite healthy and is processing food perfectly.

If the tongue has a thick coat, it indicates an imbalance that affects the physiology of the body. It may be the result of an injury or illness. A thick white coating may also be a sign of infection or to indicate that any part of the system does not perform its function.

If the language has a yellow coating it may indicate to increased body temperature, fever, which is a sign of inflammation or bacterial infection.

Peeled tongue — it could mean that the body is completely exhausted and without energy, and can be an indicator of allergy and autoimmune diseases.


In Chinese medicine it is believed that the tongue is an extension of the heart and its color reflects the health of the blood. The tongue of a healthy person should be pale pink.

Yellow tongue — is extremely rare occurrence and it can indicate to a jaundice.

Purple tongue — is a sign of years of inflammation and may occur when there is a lack of vitamin B2 and in women who have heavy menstrual cycles.

Advice: The best time for cleaning and maintaining hygiene of the tongue is in the morning on an empty stomach. The procedure is very simple: stick the tongue out and scrape the entire surface of it. Practice this procedure regularly in the mornings, same as washing your teeth.
